ESOL for Work - Entry 3

Who is this course for?

Adults (19+) who speak another language and want to improve their English to live and work in the UK. The course is free for learners on certain eligible income-based benefits such as Universal Credit, JSA, ESA.

Course aims

  • To provide on-going assessment of your progress and a report for you and the JCP
  • To improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to help you in your everyday life and to improve your chances of finding work.
  • To improve your IT skills for basic communication and learning.
  • To learn about life in the UK.

What qualifications do I need?

None, you will be assessed and placed into a class suitable for your level.

What will I learn?

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

Language Skills

  • Speak clearly and make relevant contributions in a range of situations using formal and informal language when appropriate.
  • Listen to and understand explanations, instructions and narratives in a range of topics.
  • Read, scan and obtain specific information in a range of text types.
  • Plan and draft writing using correct punctuation and basic grammar.
  • Recognise the different cultures in the UK and the festivals that are celebrated.

IT Skills

  • Use a computer for word processing and communication eg. emails, letters and forms.
  • Use the internet for research eg. websites for improving English and looking for jobs.
  • Manage a JCP Universal Jobmatch account and complete online applications.

Employability

  • Develop skills in teamwork, problem solving and time-management.
  • Engage in all aspects of the job application process eg. source job vacancies, complete application forms, produce a curriculum vitae, prepare for job interviews.

How will I learn?

  • Attend for 1, 2 or 3 sessions per week depending on your course.
  • Work in groups, pairs or individually with the support of your tutor.
  • Learn online and in the classroom.
  • Paper-based and online activities will be set as homework to be completed at home.
  • You will have an individual learning plan with targets that are personal to you.
  • 1:1 talks with your teacher to talk about your progress (tutorials)

What could this course lead to?

This course could lead to a higher-level course in ESOL with us, or another provider, and help you to find a job.
