Course overview

Drawing Skills - Beginners

This course is aimed at those with no or little experience of drawing skills.

The course will introduce you to basic drawing techniques and develop drawing and mark-making skills. You will explore different styles of drawing and develop a better understanding of key drawing concepts such as line, tone, representation and composition. You will experiment with a variety of mark-making techniques using a range of materials such as pencil, charcoal and pastels to build your confidence.

By the end of the course you will have produced a number of development pieces applying the techniques you have learnt.

Materials needed for first lesson: A4 Sketchbook, pencils, coloured pencils.


Drawing & Painting – Beginners / Intermediate

This short course is suitable for those with some experience of drawing skills, confident in using a range of mark making media and wishing to now learn more about using paint. The course will introduce you to basic painting techniques and develop your skills in a variety of methods of applying paint.

You will explore different styles of painting to develop a better understanding of key techniques such as shade and tone, use of colour and composition. You will experiment with a variety of paint using a range of materials such as watercolour and acrylic to build your confidence.

By the end of the course you will have produced a number of development pieces applying the techniques you have learnt.

Materials needed for first lesson: A4 Sketchbook, pencils, watercolours.


Watercolours – Beginners / Intermediate

This course is suitable for those with some experience of drawing and painting who wish to learn more about using watercolour paints.

The course will introduce you a variety of watercolour painting techniques and develop your skills in representing forms using shade and tone, use of colour and composition. You will learn how to mix and layer of colour to produce a range of effects and how to build depth and shade using the watercolour medium.

Materials needed for first lesson: A4 Sketchbook, pencils, watercolours.


Art for Wellbeing

This course will show you how to use art as a means of relaxation and escapism whilst learning new skills and meeting new people.

By the end of the course, you will have produced an original floral / plant inspired final painting showcasing the new techniques and knowledge you have acquired.

Materials needed for first lesson: A4 Sketchbook, pencils, watercolours.

Cake Baking and Cookery 2024

Cookery, Cake Decorating and Sugarcraft

Course overviews

Cake Baking or Cookery - Beginners 

These courses are aimed at beginners with little or no experience with baking and cooking.

The courses will introduce you to basic cooking and baking techniques and develop your skills. You will explore different methods and techniques that will help to build your confidence. By the end of the course, you will have made several foods applying the techniques you have learnt.

Sugarcraft / Cake Decorating - Beginners

This course is aimed to give beginners a choice of a few designs that can be used to decorate either cupcakes or a larger celebration cake.

You will be able to try different techniques and be encouraged to proceed on to more complex designs as you gain confidence by completing this small course. You are required to provide your own flower/gum paste which can be bought online or from DIY Icing around the corner from Erdington Adult Education Centre.

Cookies, Muffins and Puddings - Beginners

This short course covers a variety of puddings finished in different frostings and decorations, ranging from an egg free one to a chocolate chilli.

It will widen your skill range and encourage you to try different flavours fillings and finishing techniques. You will be required to bring a container to take home your cupcakes on the first week and on-going, you will be given a list of ingredients to bring each week.

Cooking Classic Dishes / Cooking for the Festive Season

This course will give you an opportunity to learn to cook classic dishes and to plan and prepare for the festive season. This recreational course offers a hands-on experience in preparing a variety of traditional and contemporary recipes. You will discover tips and techniques for cooking, planning and organising a successful dishes, including menu selection, time management, and presentation.

Each week you will be given a list of ingredients to bring to the class the following week.

Baking for Beginners

This short course will introduce you to the basics of baking.

Cookery is an art, BUT Baking is a science where chemical reactions take place to produce beautiful creations. At the end of this course, you will have an underpinning knowledge of how baking ingredients work and how to use the different methods for basic cakes.

Course outlines

Floristry Skills - Beginners / Intermediate

Key Skills / Techniques / Outcomes: This course will cover all the skills and techniques you will need to produce arrangements. You will produce designs and incorporate a range of techniques, using seasonal blooms and foliage.


Modern Designs – Centrepieces

Skills / Techniques / Outcomes: This course will cover all of the skills and techniques you will need to produce modern arrangements covering a range of techniques, using native flowers and foliage. Designs include wedding, funeral and celebration arrangements.


General Information

Tools/ equipment: Use tools and materials accurately, safely and correctly.

Research + enrichment: Online research of designs, techniques and costings.

Sustainability: Upcycle floristry components.

Project / Product Outcome

Programme teaching is delivered through a blend of classroom teaching, for example:

  • Tutor demonstrations
  • Practical activities
  • Research discussions

You will be expected to work independently and engage in group tasks in order to develop your skills and knowledge. The course covers a range of techniques, skills, sustainability and an awareness of employment other opportunities in the subject.

What will you learn?

You will learn

  • How to use and explore a variety of techniques, tools and equipment.
  • How to use materials, tools and equipment to produce different design arrangements
  • How to identify commonly used flowers and foliage according to the season
  • Create a range of simple contemporary designs
  • How to use primary and secondary colours
  • How to use and store plant material, tools and equipment safely
  • Develop an awareness of employment opportunities in the floristry industry

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use tools, materials and equipment correctly.
  • Develop a good standard of work using foliage/materials that are in season
  • Understand the basic theory of making floral designs and arrangements
  • Produce samples of techniques with instructions to form a portfolio.

Suitability

Anyone with an interest in developing floristry skills using seasonally appropriate plant material.

No previous experience or formal entry requirements are needed. As the course involves taking notes, measurements and making calculations you will need to have basic levels of English and Maths. You will have a short initial assessment at the start of the course to ensure that it is suitable for you.

Your responsibilities as a learner on this course

To ensure that you gain maximum benefit from your course you will need to attend all sessions, be punctual and to bring the correct materials to each session. A commitment to working independently outside the classroom is required.

Costs – Additional to course fees

Tools and equipment are available for your use at the centres. However, you will need to purchase some tools and materials for your project.

The additional course costs are estimated per term.

Equipment you will need:

For the first session you will need to bring a pen, writing pad and folder.

You will need a pair of floristry scissors (cost approx. £7.00 from Amazon) and a floristry knife (cost approx. £7.50 from Amazon) within two weeks of the course starting.

Important - in addition to the course fees, flowers and foliage will cost between £5.00 and £10.00 per session. This is dependent on the size of the design that you are making, and this will be discussed with you at enrolment.

Jewellery Making - Resin - Beginners

Resin is an amazing art medium that is so much fun to create pieces with! In this course you will learn how to correctly mix and tint your resin and create beautiful wearable art pieces. You will be able to create some terrific one-of-a-kind, unique jewellery pendants and earrings.

Learning Aspects – Key Skills / Techniques / Outcomes

Subject techniques: Add findings, form wire loops, wire wrapping and stringing on various chords.

Tools / equipment: Use tools and materials accurately, safely and correctly.

Research + enrichment: Online research of designs, techniques and costings.

Sustainability: Upcycle jewellery components.

Project / Product Outcome:

This is dependent on the size of the project that you are making and this will be discussed with you at enrolment.

Course Overview

Sewing Skills - Beginners

These courses are aimed at beginners with little or no experience with textile and sewing. The courses will introduce you to basic garment making techniques and develop your skills further. You will explore different methods and techniques that will help to build your confidence.

By the end of the course, you will have produced a garment project using the skills learned. 

Materials needed: Tape measure, Fabric scissors, Paper scissors, Sample fabric approximately 2 meters, Project fabric quantity depending on project chosen, 1 reel of thread to match project fabric


Sewing Skills / Garment / Clothes and Accessories

This course is aimed at learners with little or some sewing experience. The course will introduce and develop garment making techniques in the following subject areas,

  • Design and measurement recording
  • Commercial pattern adaptions
  • Pattern placement, fabric cutting and preparation
  • Sewing techniques e.g., inserting zips
  • Finishing skills

The aim is that by the end of the course the learner will have produced a project garment using skills learned in all the subject areas listed above. 


Sewing Skills – Beginners / Intermediate

This course is aimed at learners who has completed the beginners' course or who have the relevant experience. At this stage learners will work on a project which builds and develops the skills previously learned and introduces other more complex skills.


Pattern Cutting

This course aims to introduce hand sewing skills for the beginner or provide a space for those with some experience to develop their skills in a relaxing and non-judgmental environment.

These skills can be practiced without a sewing machine and can include embroidery and patchwork. The course offers the learner the opportunity to create individual and personalised pieces of work.
