Haja had never previously attended any sort of schooling and cannot read or write in her native language, Arabic.
This pattern had continued into her learning of English. In September 2023, Haja took the big decision to enrol onto a Pre-entry ESOL course.
Haja had decided that she wanted to be able to speak up for herself and her children. Facing several medical problems and housing issues, she wanted to be able to understood and support herself. Haja also wants her children to have a good life and would like to be able to support them with schoolwork.
Since joining BAES, Haja has learnt to spell her name and address. She can now form all letters and is beginning to read for the first time in her life. She has even joined her local library!
Haja is kind and caring and supports her classmates by translating instructions and encouraging them with their work. She has amazing attendance in spite of the day-to-day challenges she faces. Haja never lets anything stand in her way and tackles every problem with the same effort and energy.
Haja has now begun to book and attend doctors’ appointments on her own. She has made friends outside of her community and has grown in confidence. She shares ideas in class and talks to people in English.
We hope that Haja will continue to progress through the ESOL levels. She is a continuous source of amazement to the staff who work with her every day.
