Axel arrived in Birmingham in 2022 with the Cameroon Weightlifting Team for the Commonwealth Games.

After a successful Games Axel made the brave decision to seek asylum. This was no easy thing to do. He knew no-one in Birmingham and was leaving family, friends and team-mates behind.

With French as his main language, he knew to get on with his new life he needed to improve his English and gain qualifications. While in temporary accommodation, a charity worker arranged a visit to Brasshouse. Axel instantly felt like he had found his new home and joined an ESOL class.

Axel is an extremely hardworking member of our learning community and is always looking to increase his knowledge and progress. He is a strong advocate for his peers, remaining true to himself and keeping his desire to help and support others alive. This is what makes him feel whole.

His dream is to become a physiotherapist or nurse. He is committed to his studies, and nothing gets in his way. His teacher says:

“Axel does not just take - he wants to give back too. He is an amazing role model. He is an inspirational person not only in his determination to make a better life for himself but also to play a part in making his community a better place.”
