Amanuel wants to find employment.

This is his greatest motivation. He has studied over many years to build his skills and gain qualifications to achieve this.

Starting his first course with BAES in 2016, he began with computers, then Maths. However, the biggest barrier for Amanuel is to learn and achieve accreditation in English as there is such a difference between written English and British Sign Language (BSL). He started learning English with the support of a Sign Supported English Interpreter in 2020.

Amanuel is a very successful learner despite facing the substantial barriers of being deaf and only coming to Britain as an adult. He has overcome low confidence, felt scared, isolated and an outsider. He has lived in housing where he hasn’t felt safe and had times when it felt safer to hide at home. Studying with BAES has given him some respite from a sometimes-hostile world.

With his commitment, hard work and dedication, he has achieved his dream. Following a year of voluntary work as a teaching assistant in BSL workshops at Solihull College, they have now offered him paid work.

Amanuel has overcome all of the odds! He has studied hard and long to achieve success. Many others may well have given up as the path to achievement seemed too long. Amanuel has kept going with good humour, appreciation and commitment. For this, he is an inspiring individual.
