Multiply Co-ordinator

Meet Matt

Hello everybody, my name is Matt and I am the Multiply Co-ordinator with BAES.

I have a very energetic outlook on education and I am incredibly passionate about creating learning opportunities for anyone who fears maths or is uncomfortable with numbers as I was once like that. In fact it took me 16 attempts to get a C Grade in GCSE Maths and since achieving that I have completed three degrees and qualified as a teacher.

Why am I excited to lead the Multiply project?

I am excited about Multiply because it offers so many new opportunities to get comfortable with numeracy. In Birmingham 10% of our population struggle with basic maths (sometimes me included) and this project helps overcome those difficulties and builds brighter futures for individuals.

What I want people to get out of joining a Multiply course?

My aim by the end of every Multiply session is for learners to feel more at ease with numeracy and little by little start to gain more confidence. I also guide all our learners towards further maths courses and nothing is more rewarding than seeing learners progress and gain qualifications they didn’t think they could ever achieve.

What barriers do I want to breakdown?

There is lots of stigma and negativity associated with maths and so many adults are scared and worried about going back to college as they are anxious and unsure about what to expect. Multiply is not like your traditional formal maths lessons, all our learners are welcomed into a relaxed classroom and receive support from the tutors whenever they need it.

A final word from Matt...

If you are thinking about coming back in to education or even if you just want to see if you can do it, come and give Multiply a try. I’m always happy to sit down and have chat about what you want to achieve over a hot drink.

Multiply

Get comfortable with numeracy

What is Multiply?

Multiply is a new national project to help adults brush up on their number skills and take the fear out of using numbers in everyday life. If you are over 19 years old and have previously achieved less than a grade C/4 in maths, your course will be FREE.

Multiply aims to develop traditional maths skills such as addition, multiplication, division, subtraction, fractions, decimals and percentages, as well as the number knowledge to confidently deal with budgeting, managing personal finances, cooking, or helping children with homework.

I've always had anxiety doing maths, but I got better as I did more!

Corrine - Multiply Learner

Why is Multiply different?

If you have previously had a bad experience with maths at school or in education, Multiply is the perfect way to return to learning. You will be brushing up existing numeracy skills while developing new ones. You will be learning with other adults at a similar level through innovative and relevant learning experiences in a supportive and respectful learning environment. Our teachers create a learning space where it is okay to make mistakes and they also ensure that no one will make you feel uncomfortable while learning.
